Different types of roles and setting

There are a wide variety of roles within the care sector locally; you could be supporting someone with a physical disability, learning disability, autism, dementia or a mental health condition. Social Care is different to working in the health care system (where you focus on dealing with ill health and getting people better) the priority here being to support people to live their lives. This could include helping people to get ready for and attend college, supporting them to get to and take part in their hobbies and pass times. Helping them to prepare meals and eat them, support with personal care such as getting washed and dressed. You could do this either as a care support worker working for a home care (domiciliary) company or as a Personal Assistant employed directly by the person you care for. You could work in a residential or nursing care home as a support worker, nurse or activity co-ordinator organising social activities and trips for residents and supporting them to take part.

There are opportunities to specialise in different areas such as dementia, moving and handling or end of life care. You could become a trainer, work in office support and administration or work as a cook, kitchen assistant, housekeeper, driver or maintenance worker.

If you want to progress in your career there are lots of opportunities to
• Become a Registered Manager
• Set up and run your own business
• Specialise

However the thing is in social care you don't have to want to progress up the career ladder, the option is there if you want it, but you can have a fantastically rewarding job for life knowing that you are making a real difference to people.
