Single Handed Care

Who is the course aimed at?

Experienced care staff with Moving & Handling knowledge. Attendance is at the request of the Shropshire Council only

What does the course offer?

Theory of single handed care, to include:

  • Defining single handed care
  • Recognising myths surrounding single handed care and reviewing situations where it has had a positive impact
  • Understanding key health and safety principles surrounding single handed care
  • Understanding the importance of gaining consent and following care plans in relation to legislative guidance
  • Reviewing risk assessments and practicing ELITE risk assessment
  • Demonstrating the principles of efficient movement and stating behaviours that can damage the back

Discussion, demonstration and practice of single handed people handling manoeuvres, to include:

  • Support a person to come forwards and backwards in a chair
  • Assist a person to stand, to walk and sit back down
  • Assist a person to stand through the use of standing aids
  • Support a person to get in and out of bed
  • To transfer a person across the bed and up and down the bed using bed management systems
  • To roll a person onto each side through using bed management systems
  • To transfer a person from bed to chair using a sling and hoist
  • Transfer a person from chair to bed using a sling and hoist
