Information from Shropshire CCG, Medicines Management Team

In 2013 the safer sharps EU directive came into force. Locally, safer sharps devices were added to patient prescriptions as a temporary arrangement. This was to ensure that patients would not suffer interruption to treatment while the new legislation was adopted. In June 2019 NHS England advised CCGs that safer sharps devices are no longer appropriate for NHS prescription. e.g. BD autoshield Duo needles, unistik comfort 3 lancets This information is detailed in the letter attached. We are now required to notify care organisations that we are no longer able to prescribe such devices for patients. Employers are required to procure these devices for their employees to use. The commissioning statement from July 2019, also available on the Shropshire CCG website http://www.shropshireccg.nhs.uk/policies-and-reports/our-policies/medicines-management/ This change will be implemented as of 7th October 2019.
